More about Vaila
I have lived out of my native UK for 20 years, studying in Ecuador and working in France, Gabon, and the US as a journalist for top international media including Agence France-Presse and France 24 (with dabbles in corporate messaging, non-profit communications and risk advisory). I love landing in other cultures and have traveled to over 40 countries, from Vietnam, to Bolivia, to Israel. I am deeply familiar with the joys and challenges of existing in a culture that is not my own.
What really juices me is human connection and I believe that staying curious and communicating protects against today’s disintegration of personal interaction/a world strained by social media, AI and deep polarization. Over time I have become an interpreter of cultures, behaviors and emotions to friends and colleagues which gave me the idea for Curios. So I retrained in intercultural communications with the University of Cambridge and in emotional intelligence with the University of Berkeley, California. I speak English, French and Spanish, and hold a first-class BA in English Literature and French and an MA in International Relations. I am my own student, continuing to unpick my biases, learning from my kids’ generation and swotting up on the latest thinking on communication and emotional intelligence.
